Autumn has become, undeniably, the season of one single iconic fruit. Apart from that, autumn means shorter days, cooler temperatures, changing trees and, of course, pumpkin spice everything. Fast-casual bakery/cafe Au Bon Pain is getting the jump on the season and unveiling its pumpkin-centric fall menu on Aug. 29, featuring fall’s favorite flavors — mostly pumpkin.
As Katherine See, Au Bon Pain’s vice president of culinary innovation, said in a release:
“We carefully selected these new fall menu items to offer our customers a variety of innovative ingredient combinations alongside classic flavor profiles to highlight the traditional tastes of the season,” “Each recipe we develop focuses on using high quality ingredients, keeping in mind proven items that our customers enjoy, and hopefully creating new favorites along the way.”
Autumnal options include the Bonte Cristo Sandwich, a warm croissant piled with sliced turkey breast ham, Swiss cheese and maple pumpkin butter.
The Pumpkin Pie Bon Tart is a hand-held pastry with spiced, real pumpkin filling topped with cinnamon and white icing; the flaky, golden Pumpkin Croissant comes loaded with pumpkin filling and topped with cinnamon sugar. There’s also the new Maple Pumpkin Butter and Lite Cream Cheese Bagel, with one spread on each half for a fantastic fall combination.
Au Bon Pain’s new soups include a Butternut Squash & Apple soup made with butternut squash, golden pumpkin and apple purees in a vegetarian velouté with sweet cream, maple syrup and rosemary, and its Turkey, Kale & Wild Rice Soup, simmered with carrots, celery and onions in a creamy stock.
To wash down this pumpkin picnic, Au Bon Pain will be whipping up Pumpkin Pie Lattes, a rich, aromatic espresso blended with pumpkin pie spice, topped with frothed milk and dusted with cinnamon, served hot or iced — depending on fall temperatures in your state, this may be a good idea.
Of course, it can’t be all pumpkin, so Au Bon Pain’s fall menu features a few other favorite fall flavors including Cranberry Orange Muffins and Apple Danishes. As Au Bon Pain Corporate Executive Chef Katherine See said,
“Everyone thinks pumpkin when fall comes around and we went all in. My favorite is the Pumpkin Pie Bon Tart—it’s like having a slice of homemade pie in your hand. The Bonte Cristo sandwich has such a satisfying blend of savory with just enough sweet from the maple pumpkin butter. It’s always hard to say goodbye to summer, but we love all the warm and delicious flavors that come with fall.”
