The French Revolution began on July 14, 1789 when a bunch of political prisoners were released by a mob, known historically as The Storming of the Bastille. Today, this turning point in French history is celebrated by the French people and the Francophiles who dream of emulating their laissez faire lifestyle. Lucky for us, several Charleston restaurants are continuing this tradition of partying, fanfare, and loads of food with Bastille Day-themed festivities. Allons-y!
Juan Luis of Workshop will turn into Jean Louis to celebrate the holiday. From 4 to 8 p.m., munch on classic French fare, like steak tartare and tuna nicoise, paired with French wines from Graft and cocktails from Cocktail Club.
The Washout hosts Best Friends of Lowcountry Transit for their rally to bring buses back to Folly, in true Bastillian protest fashion. They’ll offer specials to munch and sip on while you sing Wheels on the Bus.
Head to Ballroom Dance Charleston for a thorough celebration complete with waltz lessons, a four-course French dinner, and plenty of dancing.
Rue de Jean will offer a prixe fix menu for $50 a person. The menu will include basil Parisian gnocchi, seared sea scallops, and a berry fruit tart. There will be half-glass wine pairings available for $20.
Running from 5 to 9:30 p.m., Bistro Toulouse’s Bastille Day celebration features specials from Chef Matt including a duck confit salad with berries; arugula and radishes, mussels and frites (mariniere, provençal and truffle mushroom); coq au vin with pomme purée; choucroute garnie featuring house made sausage, roast pork, bacon, potato, sauerkraut; and French flag profiteroles (vanilla ice cream, blueberry, and strawberry sauce). Libations include Fleur de Lys & Le Marseillaise Cocktails, $5 Kronenbourg draft, and $6 glasses of champagne and featured French wines. French music and party favors are also included.
