Among the long list of things you have to do to plan a wedding, making your own cake is probably not a priority. But what if you don’t want to pay a caterer to do the dirty work and can rope in a helpful friend instead? Maybe this new DIY kit from Duff, the Ace of Cakes himself, will make it easier.
Last week Duff Goldman announced his partnership with the meal delivery system Chef’d on Twitter. Unlike other meal delivery services, Chef’d operates a bit more a la carte — you can simply order just a muffin mix if you want (or, in this, case a DIY wedding cake kit). How cool, interesting, and curious is that?
Goldman has several different recipes to pick from on the Chef’d site, all of which look delicious. This wedding cake is the latest to be available for purchase — just in time for fall weddings!
For $189 you receive a kit that includes all the ingredients except salt and cooking spray. There are a few kitchen tools required, but nothing too complicated or hard to buy. The process is labeled as “hard” on the Chef’d website and this three-tiered cake is stated to take you at least six hours to make. This includes everything from fondant and pretty little rose decorations to the basic cake and filling itself. You will also have access to videos and tutorials from Duff.
Having personally made many a wedding cake in my day, I’m left feeling a little conflicted about this product. I can see it being a great help for someone who has been asked to make a wedding cake, or for someone who has baking skills but has never done “a wedding cake” and needs some guidance.
On the other hand, I see the $189 price tag as only yielding 30 servings of cake. How many people were at the last wedding you attended? I think an average, if not low, estimate could be 100 people, right? So you’d need to be making three of these bad boys or backup cakes to supplement. But if you’re already making backup cake, then is the $189 price point really worth it? I don’t think so.
