If anybody deserves a good meal, it’s a person who just had a baby. Giving birth is an exhausting, incredibly difficult experience that in a just world would be followed immediately by congratulatory cake and ice cream. Unfortunately, many new parents are lucky to get a vending machine sandwich and a cup of water.
That’s why one new mother in Japan was so shocked by the beautiful food her hospital served that she started posting photos of it online. Now the entire world wants to go have babies in Japan.
“I recently gave birth in Japan,” the unnamed new mother said in her post on Imgur. “Here is some of the hospital food I ate.”
Then she posted photos of 12 meals so beautiful they look like they belong on Instagram. Every meal had at least five dishes served on an array of different plates and bowls. And they were real plates and bowls, too! The plates were as shocking as the food.
“OMG it’s porcelain! You get crappy plastic Tupperware in the U.S. at best,” one gobsmacked commenter exclaimed.
The food looks like actual restaurant food, and each of her 12 meals was completely different. One menu was classic Japanese comfort food with fried squid rings, macaroni salad, chicken soup, fresh fruit, and omurice, an omelet filled with fried rice and topped with ketchup.
For another dinner she received salmon with fresh mushrooms, soba noodles, eggplant and beef, hijiki salad, and a side of roasted broccoli.
“I wanna give birth in Japan. And I am a 60-year-old man … ” a commenter said.
“Time to get pregnant and wander around Japan I guess,” said another.
“Someone knock me up with a return ticket to Osaka,” a third agreed.
The food looked delicious, but also healthy, comforting, and satisfying. Seven of the 12 meals included fish, and every meal came with soup and either rice or bread.
For her last meal in the hospital, she received a congratulatory “celebration dinner” of Camembert and raisins, roast beef, mashed potatoes, lotus root with gravy, corn soup, rice, salad, fresh fruit, and tiramisu for dessert.
Her beautiful food photos made a lot of people a little crabby about the miserable things they’ve eaten in hospitals.
“The vast majority of American hospital food is barely even edible,” a U.S. commenter complained.
“That food looks so healthy and good … can they teach Canadian hospitals how to make food?” a Canadian commenter said. Another Canadian reported getting Jell-O, Wonder Bread, and a single slice of bologna for dinner in a hospital there.
On a personal note, I’m overcome with envy. I gave birth in Germany, and my dinner was two slices of dry bread and a single piece of lunch meat. The food was so bad I convinced the staff to let me go home two days early. Next time I have a baby, I want to have it in Japan.
What kind of experience have you had with hospital food?
